Traxel Earns Big 12 Newcomer and Pitcher of the Week

On Monday, the Big 12 Conference announced West Virginia starting pitcher Blaine Traxel as the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week and the Big 12 Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week.
The senior completed his first complete game shutout of the season on Saturday, holding Baylor to six hits, striking out six and did not issue a walk in the 10-0 series clinching decision. It also marked the nation-leading fifth complete game of the season for the righty from Burbank, California, the most for a Big 12 pitcher since the 2014 season.
Traxel leads the nation with 79.2 innings pitched and maintains a 3.05 earned run average as he improved his record to 6-3. It is Traxel’s second Pitcher of the Week honor, as he previously was selected Feb. 27, but his first Newcomer of the Week selection. Traxel also was named National Co-Pitcher of the Week by the NCBWA.
Traxel and the Mountaineers will be back in action Wednesday night in the second game of a three-game season series of the Backyard Brawl with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. and streaming on ESPN+.
