West Virginia Claims Series Over Oklahoma with Dominating 9-3 Win

Morgantown, WV - The West Virginia Mountaineers (36-12, 13-5) claimed their fifth Big 12 Conference series Sunday afternoon following a 9-3 decision over the Oklahoma Sooners (26-22, 10-11) Sunday afternoon.
West Virginia sophomore J.J. Wetherholt put the Mountaineers on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a solo opposite field home run.
Oklahoma Starting pitcher Carter Campbell loaded the bases in the second before freshman Logan Sauve cleared the bases for a three-RBI double and Tevin Tucker followed with an RBI double to cap off a four-run second inning.
West Virginia added a run in the third after Dayne Leonard hit a one-out single and Gran Hussey followed with a double down the left field line to score Leonard. Then, the game was delayed for approximately three hours and 45 minutes due to heavy rain.
Logan Sauve lifted a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning for another Mountaineer run and extending the lead, 7-0.
The Sooners put their first run on the board in the fifth after Anthony McKenzie worked a two-out a walk and a hard-hit ground ball by Bryce Madron skipped past the outreached glove of a diving Wetherholt and past right fielder Caleb McNeely for the RBI single. Then, Dakota Harris and Kendall Pettis followed with RBI singles for a three-run fifth inning for Oklahoma.
West Virginia added a pair of assurance runs in the seventh when Grant Hussey delivered an RBI single, and Caleb McNeely lifted a deep drive to centerfield for an RBI sacrifice fly as West Virginia climbed to a 9-3 advantage.
