West Virginia Completes Sweep of UNC Greensboro

Greensboro, NC - The West Virginia Mountaineers (15-4) completed the series sweep of the UNC Greensboro Spartans (10-10) and extended their winning streak to nine with an 8-0 decision Sunday afternoon.
A leadoff single from Landon Wallace on a bunt started a four-run second inning for the Mountaineers. He took second on a wild pitch then stole third to set up a sacrifice fly Logan Sauve scored the game's first run. Then, with one out and two on, Braden Barry ripped a three-run home run, his fourth of the year, for an early 4-0 advantage.
West Virginia added a run in the third when Wallace doubled with two outs. UNC Greensboro freshman reliever Luke Thomas followed with an intentional walk to Grant Hussey and hit Sauve to load the bases and beaned Tevin Tucker for the Mountaineers' fifth run of the afternoon.
Braden Barry and J.J. Wetherholt began the sixth inning with consecutive singles and Daynle Leonard received a five-pitch walk before Spartans reliever Matt Kemp took the mound and walked in a run before Sam White hit into a double play, scoring the second run of the sixth inning as the Mountaineers extended their lead to seven.
Tevin Tucker added an insurance run in the ninth, smacking an RBI single back up the middle as the Mountaineers cruised to an 8-0 win and the series sweep.
West Virginia starting pitcher Grant Siegel went five innings and allowed just one hit and struck out four for his second win of the season while four Mountaineer relievers combined for four hitless innings.
The Mountaineers are back in action Tuesday in game one of a two-game midweek series versus Hofstra and the start of a six-game homestand before the start of Big 12 Conference play.
