West Virginia's Season Comes to an End

Lexington, KY - The West Virginia Mountaineers (40-20) were eliminated in the 2023 NCAA Championships after falling to the Kentucky Wildcats (38-18) Sunday afternoon 10-0.
Kentucky grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Jackson Gray was beaned by sophomore Grant Siegal and Jase Felker followed with an opposite field drive down the left field line for an RBI double, and consecutive sacrifice balls scored Felker.
Reuben Church hit a leadoff single in the second and Nolan McCarty ripped a one-out RBI double into the left field corner to extend the Wildcats lead, 3-0.
Freshman Maxx Yehl stepped in for the Mountaineers to record the final out of the inning, and the Mountaineers got an inning out of the freshman before junior Carlson Reed took the mound to register the final out of the third.
Noland McCarty added a pair of Wildcat runs with a two-run home run in the fourth, and an RBI single Hunter Gilliam in the fifth ended Reed's afternoon and put Kentucky up 5-0.
Kentucky added runs in the fifth and the seventh before putting up three runs in the eighth for a 10-0 lead and held off any Mountaineers' comeback for the shutout as the Wildcats advanced and take on Indiana Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. EST.
