On Tuesday, the Big 12 Conference announced West Virginia second baseman J.J. Wetherholt as the Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week. The honor is the second for the sophomore this season, claiming the weekly award following the second week of the season. Senior shortstop Tevin Tucker grabbed the award last week.

Wetherholt returned to the starting lineup last Tuesday against Penn State after a five-game absence with a hand injury. He returned to action a game prior as a pinch-hitter in the series finale against TCU and went 2-3 at the plate with four RBI’s and a double. He was reinstalled into the starting lineup Tuesday night in the designated hitter spot where he dazzled the crowd with a grand slam in the 14-2 pounding of Penn State.

The Mars, Pennsylvania native helped guide the Mountaineers to a 4-0 last week, extending the Mountaineers winning streak to eight, and hit .529 with three home runs and a triple for a 1.726 OPS in the four contests.

Wetherholt is batting a conference-leading .459 batting average, which ranks third in the NCAA to go with team-highs 4 R8BIs and 17 doubles and a conference leading 31 stolen bases.

Wetherholt and the Mountaineers will be back in action Wednesday night in the second game of a three-game season series of the Backyard Brawl with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. and streaming on ESPN+.
