Christmas Wish List for WVU Football

First of all, we at Mountaineers Now wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We truly thank you for your support throughout another year of WVU coverage! We look forward to continuing to grow our community here in 2024 and beyond.

With it being Christmas, I figured it would be a great idea to discuss what should be on WVU football's Christmas wish list.

Player Retention

Several of WVU's key players have committed to a partnership with Country Roads Trust for the 2024 season. Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily mean they will without a doubt be at WVU in 2024. It's more of a verbal agreement than anything. A player could commit to the Trust and end up hopping in the portal after the bowl or sometime in the spring. Until the ball is kicked into the air next September, nothing is safe.

Health

You could put this on every wish list be it sports or just life in general. To be keep it football-oriented, the Mountaineers have a chance to do something truly special in 2024 but they're going to need all of their horses. CJ Donaldson, in particular. Donaldson has battled numerous injuries over the course of his first two seasons in Morgantown and having him healthy would provide a dynamic duo in the backfield with Jahiem White.

Solid Replacements

Replacing Beanie Bishop at corner or Zach Frazier at center, two All-Americans, is a hard thing to do. I'm not expecting the next man up at either of those two spots to play at an All-American level, but it's critical that they get respectable play. Bishop's ability to lock down an opposing team's No. 1 WR really impacted what teams could do in the pass game. And as Frazier is concerned, he played a massive part in West Virginia's rushing success. The backs are there, they just need continued quality play at center.

Compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff

This may sound crazy when you first read it, Santa, but the format is being moved to 12 teams next year. This is actually a doable feat for a team like West Virginia, unlike the four-team playoff. I don't know if they'll be quite good enough to get in, but playing meaningful football in November is something all Mountaineer fans are hoping for and with the potential aforementioned gifts being granted, this is a possibility.
