Drake Maye to Skip Bowl Game, Declares for NFL Draft

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye announced he will sit out the postseason and train for the 2024 NFL Draft

The North Carlina Tar Heels will be without quarterback Drake Maye for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl versus West Virginia after the redshirt sophomore announced he will opt out of the postseason to prepare for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Drake Maye finished the regular season eighth in the country with an ACC leading 3,608 passing yards and 24 touchdowns while adding to the Tar Heels rushing attack with 449 yards and nine touchdowns and earned an All-ACC Second Team selection.

Maye was a dark horse for the Heisman Trophy heading in the season after throwing for 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns in 14 games and sweeping the 2022 ACC postseason awards. For his efforts, the Huntersville, NC native was voted as the ACC Player of the Year, ACC Offensive Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year. He was also named Shaun Alexander and FWAA Freshman of the Year in 2022 and was named to the FWAA Freshman All-American Team.
