Life is Bigger Than a Game of Football

MORGANTOWN, WV - Losing is a hard thing to deal with in the first place. Losing a game in the fashion that West Virginia did on Thursday night is an extremely difficult thing to move on from. But life is bigger than a game of football and this story is a great example of that.

Quarterback Garrett Greene had a record day and came oh so close to having a legendary moment by ushering a game-winning drive against Houston in the final seconds, erasing a two-score deficit. After the touchdown pass to Hudson Clement, Greene was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty for removing his helmet while on the field, forcing WVU to kickoff from its own 20. Houston took advantage of the good field position and connected on a Hail Mary to win the game.

Afterward, Greene received a lot of heat on social media as many pointed the finger at him as the reason why the Mountaineers lost the game. There were so many other reasons the game ended the way it did, but it's easy for everyone to single his penalty out.

Greene could have returned home, stayed away from everyone, and just sulked in what had just happened. He didn't. Instead, he and his center, Zach Frazier, made an impact on someone's Friday by paying a visit to a young patient named Katie battling through some tough times at the local hospital just a few hours after getting home from Houston.

The simple gesture of Greene and Frazier stopping by to show support meant the world to Katie and her family. To protect her privacy, we will not disclose information regarding her battle.

"She's just an amazing person and honestly, I feel them meeting her was just as special as her meeting them," Katie's mother, Mandy Barker Price, told Mountaineers Now. "When the boys came it broke up the mundane hospital stay that we sometimes have. It's hard to find things to keep us busy and encouraged. So having them here not only shows us that others care but also provides encouragement in the form of distraction. We know why we are here. We know God has a plan. Some days it's just nice to not have to think about it."

It just goes to show how life is much bigger than football and for Greene and Frazier, it says a lot about the type of young men they are. We ask that you join us in sending positive vibes and prayers for Katie and her family.
