MAILBAG: Portal Targets, Possible Departures, Signing Class + More

From @mpscxh752g:

Q: Any news on the Villanova transfer?

A: Nothing substantial. I'd expect him to go somewhere else due to the recent pickups WVU got out of the portal.

From @wvufan2023:

Q: If Coach Wright leaves, who do you see taking his place?

A: Haven't heard much just yet, but that will change once the move becomes official and their search begins. I'll say this, don't be surprised if it's someone outside of Neal Brown's tree. He's been very open to hire guys who he hadn't previously worked with if it's the right fit. And if I'm being honest, I think this is a good move for both Wright and WVU.

From @couz206:

Q: Is Dom Collins part of the WR room? Coach Marshall didn’t acknowledge him when tweeting about the other three in the class or during his time with Jed and Tony. And his signature had already come across. Why do you think that is?

A: Didn't get to catch the show, but yes he'll be in the receiver room. He's a project and will mainly contribute on special teams. Could have been why he wasn't mentioned. Rehmann, Farmer, and even Robinson to some extent will have chances earlier in their career.

From @EERSBeers:

Q: Traditionally WVU doesn’t get “blue chip recruits” but usually net 3-5 4 stars each class. What will it take to start getting some mid to high 4 stars back in Morgantown? If we have another 8-10 win season should we see a jump in recruiting?

A: You're going to hate my answer but don't read too much into the star ratings. You could argue there are a few kids in this class who should've been rated as such. My biggest problem with the star system is it is largely dependent on which schools offer. If a kid gets an SEC offer, all of a sudden he's good, right? They don't evaluate these kids anywhere near good enough. But to actually answer the question (sorry for the rant) yes, another winning season will help tremendously. However, it's more important than ever that the Trust has a strong foundation. The talent that becomes attracted to WVU will become better with a strong Trust.

From @AustinCarter144:

Q: Do you see Khalil Wilkins eventually being our starting QB? And what's his strengths?

A: I definitely think he has a chance. I'm always hesitant to say someone is a future starting QB because I'd like to see how they handle the transition. I will say this though, there's something there.

My scouting report on him is provided below.

Above average zip that will be a strength of his once he grows into his body and gets stronger. Knows when to take some velocity off of throws and puts good touch on it. Decent athleticism but needs to work on escapability. Gets too top heavy in the pocket at times but is able to evade pressure because he's more athletic than the talent he's going against. Needs to speed up his first step out of the pocket and not be afraid to use his legs which he showed marked improvement from his junior to senior season. Repeatable smooth delivery. Really good in the read game and throwing on the move/off platform.

From @Jackson48645777:

Q: Was there a Cincinnati LB on a visit in Motown?

A: No sir. Not that I'm aware of.

From @southwvboy:

Q: Hey Q Dog here, First time long time. Are they any good?

A: This is a pretty good class if you look at it long-term. The immediate impact isn't necessarily there but there are several starters that will be groomed and developed for a couple of years, assuming they don't grow impatient and hit the portal.

From @Jackson48645777:

Q: Any news on Cameron Martinez?

A: I'd say they are out on him, but wouldn't completely rule it out.

From @ScottEl13805771:

Q: Do you see Nicco transferring?

A: No, he's locked in. I have it on good authority he's not going anywhere.

From @wi_thompson:

Q: So what is the story on Jaylen Anderson-RB. He hasn’t been seen since UH game and not in transfer portal yet?

A: The key word there - yet. Nothing much to it other than he got passed up by Jahiem White and the two backs coming in the '24 class are projected to have higher ceilings, particularly Diore Hubbard.

From @Jackson48645777:

Q: How many more transfers do you see us getting, and what positions do we go and get?

A: I'd say between 4-6. I don't expect it to happen all right now though. There are a few guys that they have a good feeling will enter the portal either due to a coaching change, big-time production, playing time, etc. in the spring and will pursue them if they do. Two defensive backs, a pass rusher, a receiver, and a lineman.
