McAfee Asks the Question We're All Wondering

Two days later and it's still hard to comprehend how West Virginia didn't leave Houston with a win. In my near 30 years of watching WVU football, I can't recall ever seeing anything like it.

As I pointed out on Between The Eers Friday morning, WVU's personnel and alignment on the final play of the game really had me scratching my head. Linebacker Jared Bartlett didn't drop in coverage and instead, was spying on quarterback Donovan Smith. And then in the back end, several of those dropping weren't backed up far enough at the moment of the ball being snapped. But like Pat McAfee pointed out on his show on ESPN on Friday, why was tight end Kole Taylor not on the field to help break that pass up?

"We don't have our 6-foot-7 tight end back there," McAfee said. "Coach Neal Brown, I've been trusting the climb. You guys have been doing great. 4-1 could have been 5-1. We don't have a 6-foot-7 guy that we have on our team back there to bat the ball down. Nobody is going up trying to get the block down. Seems like they haven't practiced any Hail Mary defense, but anytime one of these connected you would think it's electrifying...this was heartbreaking. This was soul-snatching. This was an incredible win for Houston and a devastating loss for West Virginia. And Garrett Greene had his breakout game and now it won't be talked about because we're just 4-2 and that's Houston's first Big 12 win and it's the first win for Big 12 schools taking on old Big 12 schools which insults to injury."

Co-host of the show, AJ Hawk talked about how heartbreaking of an ending it was for West Virginia but gave credit to Houston for executing the play. McAfee still couldn't get over the fact that big Kole Taylor wasn't in the end zone.

"We have a 6-foot-7 guy, AJ... We have a 6-foot-7 guy who can catch! Why is he not on the field?!?"
