WVU Offensive Depth Chart Projections for Week 1: Pre-Fall Camp Edition

Taking my first stab at how I see the depth chart shaking out.

QB: Garrett Greene, Nicco Marchiol, Sean Boyle

Greene has the upper hand based on prior experience and what he did back in the spring game. Marchiol will make a push, but it's a lot easier to make a QB change going to Nicco than the other way around. You don't want to give Marchiol the job, pull him if he has a few bad weeks and destroy his confidence.

RB: CJ Donaldson, Jaylen Anderson, Justin Johnson Jr., Jahiem White, DJ Oliver

Donaldson is clearly RB1, but there is a ton of support behind him. Both Anderson and Johnson would start at a number of Power Five schools and the two freshmen have a really high ceiling.

WR (X): Cortez Braham Jr., Preston Fox, EJ Horton, Treylan Ray

Braham Jr. has the best hands on the team, so it makes sense he'll line up here. Can he be as productive as Bryce Ford-Wheaton? Talent isn't a concern, it's there.

WR (Z): Devin Carter, Ja'Shaun Poke

I initially predicted Carter at the 'X' but I'm not too surprised that Neal Brown has him slotted at the 'Z' given his big play and separation ability. Poke's speed will allow him to be a threat downfield, but don't be surprised to see him get some looks inside at the slot or the 'H' as well.

WR (H): Jeremiah Aaron, Rodney Gallagher III, Graeson Malashevich

Aaron is one of the guys on this offense I believe will surprise a lot of people. Yes, Gallagher III will get his fair share of targets as well, but don't overlook the former JUCO All-American.

WR (SL): Noah Massey, Jarel Williams

The slot may be the most puzzling position in WVU's offense. Do they want a bigger body there? Or do they want a smaller, shiftier playmaker that can present a mismatch for the defense? Somewhere, Noah Massey has to fit into the equation and my best guess would be here. The 6'4", 230-pounder presents a big target over the middle of the field and was ultra productive last season at Angelo State, hauling in 52 catches for 684 yards and four touchdowns.

TE: Kole Taylor, Treylan Davis, Will Dixon, Victor Wikström, TJ Johnson

This is it. This is the year the tight ends finally get involved in the passing game. We've been hearing it for years now, but they now have the personnel to see it come to fruition, headed by LSU transfer, Kole Taylor.

LT: Wyatt Milum, Nick Malone

Not sure if Malone will remain the No. 2 option throughout the entire season, but right now, he gives WVU the best chance at the position after Milum assuming they'd prefer not to shuffle the other starters around.

LG: Tomas Rimac, Maurice Hamilton

Rimac is going to make a big jump in his first full year as a starter. Walk-on Bryce Biggs is currently slated as the No. 2 guy here, but I expect Hamilton to overtake him by the end of fall camp.

C: Zach Frazier, Landen Livingston

Nothing surprising here. Livingston backs up the All-American.

RG: Ja'Quay Hubbard, Brandon Yates, Sullivan Weidman

Hubbard and Yates split time at right tackle last season and will now do so at right guard. Hubbard will likely be the first one to trot out onto the field given he has more experience inside.

RT: Doug Nester, Johnny Williams IV

Right tackle is a better fit for Nester. It looks more natural, in my opinion. His length and lateral quickness should help WVU protect the quarterback better in 2023.
