Mountaineers Set to Hit Free Agency in the NFL

A look at which West Virginia football alums are available this offseason.

NFL free agency is set to officially begin March 13th, however, teams can start negotiating and even "agree to terms" on contracts with with free agents starting on the 11th.

All of West Virginia's high profile alums in the NFL are under contract for the 2024 season. There are, however, a number of former Mountaineers who will be searching for new homes this offseason or perhaps a new deal with the team they spent the 2023 season with.

Hanging around: QB Will Grier, TE/FB Trevon Wesco, OL Adam Pankey, CB Daryl Worley

Will Grier continues to be a journeyman backup QB in the NFL and it's not a bad gig to have. He bounced around from Dallas to Cincinnati to New England to Los Angeles in 2023. A lot of teams will be in the market for a veteran backup and he might get an opportunity to compete for a No. 2 spot somewhere, especially after the show he put on last preseason in Dallas. Wesco played in 15 games (10 starts) for the Titans and although the fullback is a dying breed, he can offer value at tight end as well. Pankey spent a stint on the practice squad in Dallas while Daryl Worley was worked in as a rotational DB in Baltimore.

Not retired yet: WR Tavon Austin, DE Bruce Irvin, LB Nick Kwiatkoski, S Karl Joseph.

Tavon Austin and Karl Joseph haven't been on a roster since 2022, yet have not announced an official retirement. Kwiatkoski spent part of 2023 on the Steelers' practice squad while Irvin had mini stints in Detroit and Miami after sitting out a good portion of 2023.
