Former Chargers RB Lorenzo Neal on Strength of Greg Roman Hire, “He’s a Run Game Connoisseur”

Lorenzo Neal breaks down what Greg Roman brings to the Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers officially announced that Greg Roman will be the team's new offensive coordinator. Roman has a wealth of experience to impart on the offense, especially being that he was one of the chief architects of the Baltimore Ravens offense.

Roman took a year off from coaching in 2023 but handled the OC duties for the Ravens from 2019 to 2022. Former Chargers RB running back Lorenzo Neal knows exactly what makes Roman such a force, especially in terms of his run game designs.

"Greg Roman. We know. You seen what he did with the 49ers, with Lamar. Greg Roman is a run-game connoisseur. He's a master. It's physicality. You see, the way we with Kap and all the different things he's done with offenses. You are going to have a team that is going to, you know, impose its will."

Roman is responsible for allowing the Ravens' offense to fire on all cylinders with its dual-rushing attack that has made them such a force the last few seasons. The same can be said for when he was with the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick.

While Justin Herbert may not be the rushing QB that Jackson is, he could still be placed in better positions with a better run game attached to the offensive plan of attack for the 2024 season. It will just be interesting to see who the Chargers get in free agency or the draft to kickstart their rushing attack.

"I think you just you think about some of what you can what those guys can get in the in the draft, especially if you're picking up extra twos and threes. As you trade down the board, you can get yourself great value, you know, in four years of front and see fresh legs running that ball, you know, and I think think about like a Gus Edwards."

Matt Smith believes the Chargers can get a quality back via the draft, but also proposes the team look into Gus Edwards, who has plenty of experience with Roman. Another suggestion from the Ravens could be J.K. Dobbins, though his injury concerns might be a bit too risky.
