Patrick Chiotti and Chris Harris Jr. Detail Why Russell Wilson Failed Under Sean Payton

Russell Wilson fell out of favor with Broncos head coach Sean Payton, and Patrick Chiotti and Chris Harris Jr. detail why.

The Denver Broncos were meant to be a playoff team, but that did not happen. The team may have traded for Russell Wilson, but he has not lived up to expectations. With Sean Payton running the team, it appears Wilson fell way out of favor with the head coach.

Wilson was benched in favor of letting the young Broncos QBs get a shot at starting instead. Wilson was playing well, but something just didn't seem to click overall. Patrick Chiotti and Chris Harris Jr. discuss what happened between Payton and Wilson on Bleav Network's Let's Ride.

"'Sean Payton is one of the most thorough and meticulous game planners, designers, and callers of an offense that this league has ever seen. And what he saw from watching the film and comparing it to his time with New Orleans, he said the timing was off. A lot of it had to do with the rhythm of the plays.'"

Chiotti is restating what Drew Brees had to say about what he saw from Wilson in Payton's offense. The timing was way off, which was evident for anyone who watched the team play.

Wilson appeared to be out of sync, which is what led to the team being wildly underwhelming. Despite Wilson having a proven resume, he may just not work in the confines of Coach Payton's offense.

"I commend Russell for what he did and how he played, but it's best for him to move on. Like Drew said, it's more up-tempo. It's more about getting the ball out as a fast-paced offense. I played Drew Brees. It's staying in a pocket, looking up and down, and dotting it over the head. You know what I mean? He e didn't run the offense."

The problem is despite a quarterback being a proven winner, they sometimes don't click in every offense. Brees had a style that matched up well with Payton's offense, but Wilson did not.

Wilson will likely be a starter elsewhere, but the Broncos are looking to draft a new signal caller in the draft. They could attempt to trade up for that player. The bottom line is Wilson is done with the Broncos, and now we know why.
