Jonny Lazarus Explains How Rangers Win the Trade Deadline Every Year

Jonny Lazarus explains how the New York Rangers are one of few teams that can win a trade deadline each year.

Following Saturday’s memorable outdoor victory over the Islanders, the New York Rangers have now not lost a game since the All-Star break, including a 7-0 record since January 26. With the trade deadline only two weeks away now, the Rangers are looking to be buyers once again for a playoff push.

The Rangers are rarely one to be sellers at the trade deadline, and the Blue Crew does not believe them to be that this year. There is a lot of talk about what young players and draft picks to keep and give up, especially with James Dolan wanting to keep his 2024 1st-round pick for next year’s draft at his Las Vegas Sphere.

"I think you can get rid of some of the younger guys on this roster. You can feel comfortable knowing what you have with guys like Perreault and Othmann, and being able to retool and sign free agents and make trades in the future."

Lazarus argues that some of the young guys currently on the roster can go because we still have two promising young guys in Brennan Othmann and Gabe Perreault. This being said, Lazarus continues to explain the history of the Rangers at these deadlines.

New York sports teams are always a part of the big market, and the Blue Crew has faith in their front office to continue to sign free agents and trade for players to make a deep playoff run.

As this year’s trade deadline approaches, the Rangers find themselves in a familiar position as in past years. With strong leadership from Panarin, Zibanejad, and Trouba, and plenty of young talent on the rise, the Rangers believe this is their year.

Lazarus believes in GM Chris Drury to add some final veteran pieces to put this team over the top without sacrificing too much future potential. One or two more physical, goal-scoring wingers could be the final ingredients for a Stanley Cup recipe. I expect the Blueshirts to be aggressive at the deadline while still protecting their top future assets. This team and their fans expect nothing less than playing for a Cup in June.
