Arguably the best player left in the college football transfer portal has found a new school, as defensive end Ochaun Mathis announced he will play at Nebraska.

Mathis, a former All Big 12 player at TCU, revealed he will transfer to the Cornhuskers for the 2022 football season on Twitter Live.

Nebraska beat out Texas to sign the defensive end.

An honored player

The lineman earned second-team All Big 12 honors last fall for the Horned Frogs, adding four sacks and seven tackles for loss with three pass breakups.

Mathis was second-team All Big 12 in 2020, when he led the conference with nine sacks and placed third with 14 tackles for loss.

Mathis started three seasons for TCU, which parted ways with head coach Gary Patterson this offseason after his 20 year tenure.

College Football HQ named Mathis the No. 1 player available in the transfer portal at the time of his announcement.

Texas or Nebraska?

Texas emerged as a favorite to land Mathis after Patterson joined the Longhorns staff as head coach Steve Sarkisian's special assistant, with some analysts projecting the player would follow his former coach.

Instead, he lands with a Big Ten program looking to make a statement in 2022.

Mathis has two years of eligibility remaining and is a major transfer gain for Nebraska under fifth-year head coach Scott Frost, who is yet to record a winning season with the Huskers, but who has made several major changes this offseason.

Frost hired former Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, who last season engineered the Panthers' ACC championship offense.

Nebraska also added former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson in the college football transfer portal after he led the Big 12 in touchdowns last season.

Nebraska is 15-29 under Frost and went 3-9 last fall, with all nine losses coming by single digits, including against Big Ten powers Michigan and Ohio State.
