Ohio State offensive lineman Harry Miller announced he will retire from football amid a serious mental health struggle the player recently made public.

A former 5-star prospect who seemed destined for a prominent role on Buckeyes teams in the near future was notably absent days before the 2021 season opener.

In a public letter, Miller detailed why he was unavailable.

“Prior to the season last year, I told [Ohio State] Coach [Ryan] Day of my intention to kill myself," Miller said in the letter posted to Twitter.

“He immediately had me in touch with Dr. Candice and Dr. Norman, and I received the support I needed. After a few weeks, I tried my luck at football once again with scars on my wrists and throat.

“Maybe the scars were hard to see with my wrists taped up. Maybe it was hard to see the scars through the bright colors of the television. Maybe the scars were hard to hear through all the talk shows and interviews.

“They are hard to see, and they are easy to hide, but they sure do hurt. There was a dead man on the television set, but nobody knew it.”

Miller returned to Ohio State last season before succumbing to a knee injury that kept him from the football field a second time.

But the player was dealing with something far more serious than that behind the scenes. And it's that issue that Miller will give his full attention to going forward.
