Rece Davis Believes a 4-Win College Football Team is an SEC Sleeper Ahead of 2026 Season

The 2025 college football season was a disappointing one for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

South Carolina Has Disappointing Season

South Carolina entered the season ranked No. 13 after a 9-4 season in 2024. That year, the Gamecocks narrowly missed the College Football Playoff. They entered the 2025 season with star quarterback LaNorris Sellers and EDGE Dylan Stewart back, hoping to get the Gamecocks over the hump.

The team didn't come close. South Carolina finished the year 4-8 after ranking as high as No. 10 in the country. This has put a lot of pressure on head coach Shane Beamer heading into the 2026 season.

The positives are that he returns Sellers and Stewart, as well as rising star wide receiver Nyck Harbor. The hope is that these returnees, as well as some changes to Beamer's staff, will get them back into contention.

Rece Davis Believes South Carolina is the Sleeper of the SEC

In fact, on the "College GameDay Podcast," host Rece Davis said that he thinks the Gamecocks are the sleeper in the SEC this season, pointing to those three players.

"I'm going to take a team that went 1-7 in the SEC last year," Davis said. "I think this team could fight its way into fringe playoff contention, and that's South Carolina. It's a huge jump. I get it. But if you're going to start, you might as well have difference-makers at the three most important positions."

Davis' argument starts with the talent South Carolina already has on its roster. Sellers gives the Gamecocks a dynamic quarterback capable of changing games with both his arm and legs.

Stewart has established himself as one of the nation's premier EDGE defenders and a potential high pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Harbor, meanwhile, gives the offense another explosive playmaker who could take a major step forward in 2026.

Having difference-makers at quarterback, EDGE and wide receiver gives South Carolina a foundation that few teams can match. The challenge will be getting enough production from the rest of the roster to complement those stars.

Can Shane Beamer Lead South Carolina From 4-8 to the Playoff?

The jump from 4-8 to playoff contention would be enormous, particularly in the SEC. But South Carolina has already shown that it can compete at a high level under Beamer, finishing 9-4 in 2024 and narrowly missing the CFP.

That makes 2026 a pivotal season. If Sellers returns to his 2024 form, Steward continues developing into an elite defender, and Harbor becomes the explosive offensive weapon Davis expects, the Gamecocks could surprise some teams in the SEC.

Davis' prediction may seem aggressive after a 1-7 conference record, but South Carolina has enough star power to make the Gamecocks one of the SEC's most intriguing sleeper teams in 2026.
