The Vanderbilt Commodores were one of the surprises of the 2026 college football season.

Vanderbilt Has Best Season in Program History

After going 7-6 in 2024, the team's first winning season since 2013, Vanderbilt had its best season in program history. The Commodores, led by head coach Clark Lea, went 10-3 last season, the first double-digit-win season in program history.

The team was led by quarterback Diego Pavia, who threw for 3,529 yards, 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while rushing for 862 yards and 10 scores. He was named the SEC Player of the Year and finished second for the Heisman Trophy.

Entering the 2026 season, Vanderbilt hopes to have more success than last season's breakthrough year; however, it will have to do that without Pavia. The team did sign one of the best quarterbacks in the 2026 recruiting class. Five-star Jared Curtis was the No. 2 overall prospect and No. 1-ranked quarterback, according to Rivals. He chose the Commodores over the Georgia Bulldogs.

Rece Davis Highlighs Vanderbilt's Favorable Schedule Entering 2026

ESPN's Rece Davis was reviewing Vanderbilt's 2026 odds on the "College GameDay Podcast." He said that the schedule is very beneficial for the Commodores.

"The schedule is pretty friendly," Davis said. "Relatively friendly. Some of the tougher games are at home. SEC-wise, they are at Mississippi State... should be improved. You go to Florida. They get Alabama at home, Ole Miss at home. You go to Auburn early."

Replacing Pavia won't be easy. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the country last season and played a major role in transforming Vanderbilt into an SEC contender.

There will inevitably be a learning curve for Curtis, but his talent gives Lea a foundation to build around as Vanderbilt enters a new era at quarterback.

Can Clark Lea Keep Vanderbilt Among the SEC's Surprise Teams?

Vanderbilt's schedule could make the transition easier for Curtis. The Commodores have several challenging SEC games, but Davis pointed out that some of their toughest opponents will come to Nashville.

Alabama and Ole Miss visit Vanderbilt, while the Commodores also face Florida and Auburn on the road. If the defense remains strong and Curtis develops quickly, Vanderbilt could once again find itself in the SEC race.

The biggest question is whether Lea can maintain the momentum after losing the best quarterback in program history. If Curtis can provide even a fraction of what Pavia did, Vanderbilt could prove last season was the beginning of something rather than a one-year breakthrough.
