Rece Davis Names SEC Coach Facing Must-Win 2026 College Football Season

It’s always must-win time in the SEC with schools and coaches facing a yearly gauntlet to emerge as the most dominant contender in what has been in recent years college football’s most dominant conference.
Looking over the landscape across the league, one name sticks out for College GameDay host Rece Davis, who named the program and coach that needs to prove they’re a consistent winner and not a one-time fluke.
Who needs to win in the SEC?
“I think probably if you’re looking for somebody who has to win, it might be Shane Beamer at South Carolina,” Davis said on The Pat McAfee Show.
"I think Kalen DeBoer and Alabama are gonna be pretty good..

He added: “I actually believe they’re going to win, and if they get healthy, I think they can be one of the surprise teams in the country.”
Where the Gamecocks are now
Davis’ comments come as the Gamecocks prepare for another demanding year in the SEC. Beamer is 33-30 in five full seasons at the helm, including a personal-best 9-4 mark in the 2024 season before a regression to a 4-8 team a year ago.
Returning talent and strategic transfer portal additions could prove to be the combination that Davis believes will put South Carolina in position for a breakthrough that elevates the school’s national profile again in 2026.
Beamer has improved South Carolina’s competitiveness since taking over, delivering memorable performances against ranked opponents and shown an ability to compete with the SEC’s traditional powers.
Coming into this season, the Gamecocks have proven continuity on both sides of the ball, especially quarterback LaNorris Sellers and edge rusher Dylan Stewart, each of whom will be integral in proving this team can improve its efficiency on both sides of the ball after last season’s step back.
Can the ‘Cocks take over the SEC?

Davis’ remarks reflect a broader view of the SEC’s depth. While established contenders expectedly dominate the preseason rankings, the conference’s competitiveness creates openings for schools ready to take the next step, as South Carolina showed in 2024.
By singling out Beamer and the Gamecocks, the College GameDay host signaled that South Carolina does really belong in the conversation about teams with upside.
As the season approaches, the focus in Columbia will be on translating that potential into results. A strong start, key wins in marquee games, and sustained improvement will go further in validating Beamer’s position and making South Carolina a real contender out of the SEC.
