Chicago White Sox' Lefty Makes History Yet Again in Uneven Start on Saturday

The Chicago White Sox don't look very good in the early going of 2024, but young lefty Garrett Crochet is providing some hope for the future. He made history yet again in Saturday's effort against the Cincinnati Reds.

There's not much to smile about these days for the Chicago White Sox, but left-hander Garrett Crochet might just be something to get excited about.

The White Sox entered play on Saturday at 2-11 and as one of the lightest-hitting teams in the league. Factor in long-term injuries to Luis Robert and Yoan Moncada, and it looks dire on the South Side. But again, Crochet, who made a full-time move to the starting rotation this season, is providing some reasons for optimism.

Armed with elite swing-and-miss stuff, Crochet continues to make White Sox history at nearly every turn, and he did so again on Saturday.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com on social media:

Garrett Crochet’s 31 strikeouts so far this season are the most in a pitcher’s 1st 4 career starts in White Sox franchise history

prior record was 27, by Bruce Howard

Crochet struck out 10 over 4.2 innings against the Cincinnati Reds. It was an otherwise uneven performance from the lefty, who surrendered five runs total, all of them in the second inning. Crochet now has an ERA of 3.57 for the season.

The White Sox figure to be among the worst teams in all of baseball this season, so it will be interesting to see how they handle Crochet moving forward. Since he has never gone through a full season before, they could elect to skip starts or shut him down at some point, especially as the game's look increasingly like they won't matter all that much in 2024.
