Houston Astros on the Wrong Side of Baseball History During Recent Cold Stretch

The Houston Astros were beaten by the Texas Rangers on Friday night, 12-8, as the starting pitching continues a historically bad stretch for Houston.

The Houston Astros were beaten by the Texas Rangers on Friday night, 12-8, as the team's starting pitching continued a historic stretch of futility.

Per @OptaSTATS on social media:

The Astros are the only MLB team to have their starters allow 24+ earned runs while getting fewer than 24 outs over a 3-game span (since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913)

JP France pitched four innings on Friday, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits. The four innings mean that he got 12 outs.

In Thursday's lopsided loss to the Kansas City Royals, Hunter Brown allowed nine earned runs in just 0.2 of an inning, bringing the earned run total to 17 with just 14 outs gotten.

The Astros lost 11-2 to the Royals on Wednesday, getting just 3.0 innings from Spencer Arrighetti. He allowed seven earned runs, bringing the starters total to 24 runs and just 23 outs.

The Astros, who have been to the ALCS every single year since 2017, are a surprising 4-11 this season. However, there is hope that injured starting pitchers Justin Verlander, Jose Urquidy and Lance McCullers will be back to help the battered the rotation at somepoint. Verlander is currently on rehab assignment and should be back soon, while the others are later on down the road.

The Astros and Rangers will play again on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 4:05 p.m. ET. Andrew Heaney (0-2, 7.56 ERA) pitches for Texas against Ronel Blanco (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
