Boston Red Sox' Slugger Keeps Rolling Right into Team History Books on Sunday

By hitting another home run on Sunday, Boston Red Sox' outfielder Tyler O'Neill now has the most home runs ever (7) through a players first 14 games with the franchise.

Outfielder Tyler O'Neill stayed hot on Sunday as the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-2, at Fenway Park.

The burly slugger went 2-for-3 in the win with a home run, an RBI and a run scored. Hitting third in the order because of the injury to Rafael Devers, the home run was his seventh on the season. It also made some team history, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Tyler O’Neill’s 7 home runs are the most in a player’s first 14 games with the Red Sox

O'Neill was acquired this offseason to be a presence in the middle of the order, and thus far, he's done that. Given that the team is also down Trevor Story for the season, they'll need him to continue to be that presence. He's hitting .304 this season with a 1.209 OPS.

This partnership is setting up nicely for both the team and O'Neill. The Red Sox are getting middle of the order production and O'Neill is performing well in a contract year. If he keeps this up, he could play his way into a lucrative payday in free agency. Furthermore, if the Red Sox fall out of the race, O'Neill becomes an attractive trade chip that the team can cash in.

A seven-year veteran, O'Neill is a lifetime .250 hitter with 85 homers and 225 RBI. He's played for the Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals.

Boston is back in action on Monday morning for the annual Patriots Day game at Fenway Park. First pitch is 11:10 a.m. ET against the Cleveland Guardians.
