Chicago Cubs infielder Christopher Morel continued his tear at the plate on Tuesday night, hitting a home run in his fifth consecutive game.

By homering against the Mets, Morel became the first Cubs player to homer in five straight games -- when Sammy Sosa did it.

Patrick Mooney of 'The Athletic' tweeted the stat first:

"Christopher Morel is the first Cubs player to hit a home run in five consecutive games since Sammy Sosa in 1998."

That was certainly a magical season for Sosa, and he hit 66 home runs in the great home run battle of 1998, losing to Mark McGwire, who hit 70.

Back to Morel: This isn't the first history he's been a part of this week. We told you this past weekend about his home run prowess and how it relates to franchise history.

After going 1-3 with the homer, he's now hitting .367 since being recently called-up. He's got nine home runs and 15 RBI. For his career, he's a .250 hitter with 25 homers and 62 RBI. He made his debut in 2022 when he played in 113 games for the Cubs.

The Cubs defeated the Mets on Tuesday by a score of 7-2. Drew Smyly got the win to move to 5-1 after tossing five innings. In addition to Morel's contributions, the Cubs got a home run and three RBI from rookie Matt Mervis.

The two teams will play again on Wednesday night at 7:40 p.m. ET at Wrigley Field. Marcus Stroman pitches against Kodai Senga.
