Canelo Alvarez News: Two Lead Candidates Emerge For The Mexican Star's Next Fight

The undisputed champion's next fight may soon be set in stone.

The mystery surrounding Canelo Alvarez's next fight could soon be coming to a close.

Boxing fans have been wondering what Canelo will do next. The undisputed super middleweight champion wanted a chance to avenge his loss to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. The only problem is, Bivol's team slammed the terms of the bout for being similar to their first fight. For now, the rematch appears to be put on ice.

Mike Coppinger of ESPN reports that both WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo and WBC Cruiserweight Champion Badou Jack are the lead candidates for Canelo's next opponent this fall. Coppinger noted that the Mexican megastar and his trainer, Eddy Reynoso, met up with Premier Boxing Champions promoter Al Haymon in Cleveland to discuss a potential clash with Charlo.

Now, ESPN.com.mx is reporting that Charlo is expected to win out in the two-champion race. The report claims that Charlo is expected to challenge for Canelo's undisputed super-middleweight gold.

The two reports from ESPN come on the heels of Stephen Espinoza saying he's optimistic about Canelo returning to Showtime PPV. Espinoza is the President of Showtime Sports. Here's what he told King P of RingGangRadio.com following the first press conference for Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford:

"Look, I'm encouraged," Espinoza said. "It's still very early and Canelo and his team are doing what's smart. They're evaluating their options. They've spoken to Bivol, they've spoken to [David] Benavidez's team, they spoken to Badou Jack's team, and Charlo's team. So, I'm not saying that it's close, but at least those fights, the ones that I'm most excited about as a fan are in the running, the Charlo and the Benavidez."

We'll keep you updated on the latest details for Canelo Alvarez's next fight when more information emerges.
