On Friday night, Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler caused a stir on social media about a potential main event headliner for UFC 300 on April 13.

Once Nate Diaz, the former one-time lightweight title challenger and ex-rival of McGregor, caught wind, he decided to join in with a post of his own, which he shared across Instagram and 'X.'

"Real war," Diaz wrote as his caption.

The pair fought twice in 2016, the UFC's final year under Zuffa ownership before Endeavor acquired it. Diaz dethroned the Irishman in March of that year, their first encounter, winning by rear-naked-choke in a stunning upset at UFC 196.

Thanks to the buzz and intrigue Diaz brought to the fight despite having accepted it on 10 days' notice; a rematch was in order at UFC 202 at the newly minted T-Mobile Arena just five months later.

In what eventually became the UFC's third-highest pay-per-view buy rate ever, McGregor and Diaz delivered a five-round slugfest, which saw the eventual double champion come away with a 48-47 majority decision.

It has not materialized despite rumblings of a trilogy every few years since then. McGregor has won one fight since his UFC lightweight title victory, while Diaz, the TUF 5 winner in 2007, delivered a mixed bag of wins and losses over five years from 2017 to 2022.

After ending his relationship with the UFC on good terms in 2022, Diaz went ahead and tried his hand at boxing, losing to Jake Paul last August by decision.

At press time, the UFC has not formally announced a main event for UFC 300.
