WWE Men's Tag Team Divisions Reportedly Set for a Refresh

Will the WWE creative team be leaning on some new tag teams on Raw and SmackDown in the near future?

When WWE surprisingly let both The New Day and Motor City Machine Guns out of their contracts earlier this year, it was clear sign that the men's tag team divisions were about to go through a bit of rebuild on both Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown.

While the Red Brand is anchored by two of the longest tenured tag teams in the entire company, The Usos and The Street Profits, neither pairing is currently in the World Tag Team Championship picture. Jimmy and Jey are handling Bloodline business alongside Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu, while Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins are both off of television for paternal reasons.

In the meantime, Austin Theory and Bron Breakker are holding The Vision together with those World Tag Team Titles, even with Breakker showing very little interest in anything outside of fighting Oba Femi.

Will WWE start to lean on some new tag teams?

The Vision have yet to defend their titles since winning them at the beginning of July, but during the latest episode of WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, the guys noted that there have been conversations behind the scenes about elevating one team as potential future challengers.

"With the Street Profits currently off television as Montez Ford celebrates the birth of his son and Los Americanos being kept off TV until at least after TripleMania, there have been discussions about making the pairing of Ethan Page and Rusev more prominent. We’re told that there are some within the company that don’t want either talent simply getting lost in the tag division, however, which has made the idea of elevating them as a pairing more of a discussion than a definitive direction."

There's also the issue of both Rusev and Ethan Page being heels. There would not be much of a rooting interest for the audience if a potential tag title match-up between them and The Vision came to fruition.

Despite being brought back to television on Main Event recently, some fans will be disappointed to hear that The Creed Brothers have not been mentioned internally as potential challengers to The Vision, according to WrestleVotes.

Over on SmackDown, the new pairing of Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki, formerly known as Hiromu Takahashi in NJPW, are being set up as challengers to new WWE Tag Team Championship Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga.

WrestleVotes also says that Axiom and Nathan Frazer are expected to see increased television time, even though they've been featured in digital exclusives with Ricky Saints the past two weeks.

The Miz and Kit Wilson have also been featured in post-SmackDown digital exclusives the past couple of weeks, so while they don't have any concrete creative plans at the moment, it appears the company is pushing forward with the two of them as a team as well.

Even though the may soon be facing each other in the World Heavyweight Championship No. 1 Contender's Tournament, there's been no mention of Penta and Rey Fenix being utilized as a tag team in the near future.

The Lucha Bros. would provide a major boost to either the Raw or SmackDown Tag Team Division as they are one of the most accomplished and entertaining teams in the entire industry. Hopefully, the WWE creative team decides to give them a run together soon.
