The Los Angeles Angels have signed southpaw and Southern California native Amir Garrett to a minor league deal.

Garrett has spent his major league career with the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals. After his Royals stint, he was part of the Cleveland Guardians and San Francisco Giants minor league systems. In early February, Garrett signed a minor league deal with the Giants. However, the Giants released him on March 21 after being informed he wouldn't make the Opening Day roster.

Garrett allowed 13 hits and nine runs in 6.1 innings in spring training with San Francisco, walking seven batters and striking out just three.

Less than a week into free agency, Garrett signed with the Angels. While he's been a solid pitcher in the majors, he was also a fantastic basketball prospect. The southpaw was a four-star basketball recruit out of high school who committed to St. John's University.

The 31-year-old has a career 4.95 ERA, 376 strikeouts, and a 1.44 WHIP in 325.1 innings and 322 games. The Reds selected him in the 2011 draft with the 685th overall pick.
