Alex Vesia Reacts to Another Rough Outing for Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers came up short on Wednesday, losing 3-2 to the Minnesota Twins. While the lineup was unable to produce like normal this season, the loss also came as a result of pitching struggles.

After Bobby Miller allowed two earned runs through four innings, Alex Vesia was the first pitcher out of the Dodgers' bullpen. The left-hander lasted just two-thirds of an inning, after giving up a second home run to Edouard Julien in the fifth inning. Vesia acknowledged the mistake after the game.

“I’m the hardest person on myself. So I’ve been going over different mechanics and pitches and stuff,” Vesia said, via Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. “Today I missed my spot, and he got me.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave credit to Julien, who hit two home runs during the game, but also explained that the lack of a strong pitch other than a fastball.

“It was close to him, it was thigh-high — a good pitch for him to hit. To his credit, obviously the kid (Julien) had a big day,” Roberts said, via Plunkett. “But you’ve got to be able to mix and match your sequence. You just can’t pitch with just your fastball. If you look at this outing, they didn’t have to honor the breaking ball. So if you can’t make them honor your breaking ball, they can sell out and that’s clearly what they were doing.”

Vesia echoed what Roberts said, that he has to be less reliant on his fastball if he wants to improve off his shaky start.

“I’ve been going over different mechanics and pitches and stuff,” Vesia said, via The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. “Today I missed my spot, and he got me.”

Overall, Vesia has given up three earned runs and has a 4.05 ERA through 6.2 innings pitched this season. After ending their three-game series against the Twins with a loss, Vesia and the Dodgers will return home to take on the San Diego Padres next.
