Former San Francisco Giant Finds Landing Spot After Clearing Waivers

The former San Francisco Giants trade target has cleared the waivers and found a landing spot with the Houston Astros.

A former San Francisco Giants trade piece has settled into a home with the Houston Astros after clearing waivers.

After failing to make the final roster with the Giants in 2024, the utility player will serve as a depth piece in the minor leagues.

Cooper Hummel has had an interesting career trajectory, most recently being outrighted to Triple-A Sugar Land by the Astros once he finally cleared waivers.

The 29-year-old was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2016 MLB draft. After a few seasons in the minor leagues, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021.

He played for the Diamondbacks for a couple of years, making his MLB debut in 2022. He was once again traded to the Seattle Mariners. He only played 10 games for the Mariners before hitting the waiver wire.

Hummel was signed by the Mets off waivers, then just over a month later, they designated him for assignment . That's when the Giants decided to trade for him in exchange for cash considerations.

He didn't make the final roster for San Francisco, being optioned to the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, when he was claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros at the beginning of April. That's when the current events kicked off.

The Oregon native holds a value with teams as someone that brings a lot of versatility. He is a switch-hitter that can play a multitude of positions. He has experience at catcher, corner outfield and corner infield.

His bat has been ice cold to start his career in the majors, but has shown some potential throughout his time in the minors.

It's clear why the Giants took a chance on him. They could have likely kept him around the minor leagues as someone they can call up and fill a couple of different roles. Now that he has cleared waivers and landed with Sugar Land, the Giants will not be able to reunite with him as easily, even if they wish to.
