How Guardians Are Managing Triston McKenzie's Build-Up

Cleveland Guardians: Triston McKenzie Has "no symptoms" of last season's injuries.

Triston McKenzie will continue to have a cloud of uncertainty around him especially at the start of the regular season. The Cleveland Guardians lost Sticks for practically all of 2023 with a shoulder and then an elbow injury.

However, health isn't something Guardians pitching coach Carl Willis appears to be concerned about at this point in spring training as Sticks ramps up for the 2024 season.

"I've been really encouraged with Tirston," said Willis. "His first two outings have been really, really good. He held his stuff and even refound his velocity in the third inning of work. Physically, he has no symptoms or issues with anything."

That's about as good of news as anyone could ask for considering how last season went. The stats certainly back up what Willis has seen from the Guardians starter.

Sticks has yet to allow a run and has given up just two hits in 5.0 innings of work so far this spring. Sure, this is a small sample size. But the work that pitchers put in during bullpen sessions and other live BP sessions can be another good indicator too.

Elbow injuries, which were one of the issues McKenzie had last season, are nothing to take lightly. Of course, the Guardians will be cautious with him but Willis said this is something they do with all pitchers this time of year.

It's all about making sure everyone is prepared for the long season ahead.

"I don't think we're concerned, but we're trying to be mindful of the build-up and setting a good foundation so that as we continue to get closer to the regular season, and once the regular season starts, they have that good base."
