Injuries Creating Opportunities In Guardians Bullpen

James Karinchak and Trevor Stephan's injuries are forcing the Cleveland Guardians to look elsewhere for bullpen help.

The worst part about spring training is seeing all of the injuries that pop up as camp goes on. The Cleveland Guardians haven't been immune to this as James Karinchak works through a shoulder injury and Trevor Stephan was recently shut down for at least three weeks

Both of these pitchers are key arms in Cleveland's bullpen. The Guardians will have no choice but to find replacements if they aren't ready to go for Opening Day. Luckily for this deep pitching staff, manager Stephen Vogt is confident that guys will step up when called upon.

"We're not sure yet, but we have a number of guys in camp," said Vogt. "I think of Hunter Gaddis, [Xzavion Curry], Tyler Beede, Carlos Carrasco, and Ben Lively ... Tim Herrin is another name that comes to mind of guys who have experience in the bullpen and have pitched in the bullpen that we feel there are a number of guys who are going to get some opportunities ...  We have a number of guys that are in camp who could be competing just to be on the roster as part of our bullpen or rotation."

Some of these names should be familiar to Guardians fans. Gaddis, Curry, and Herrin were all factors last season and Carrasco is a fan favorite making his return home. Beede and Lively are the newcomers to the organization but present a skillset that Cleveland could need down the line.

Injuries are tough when they happen, but they're also part of the game. Vogt understands this and is trying to look at the silver lining in the dilemma.

"It's unfortunate when you have guys go down like that, but it also presents opportunities for others. We feel fortunate that we do have the depth."
