Recapping Cal Quantrill's Up-And-Down Season For The Guardians
Cal Quantrill took the mound in Detroit on Friday night and wrapped up his 2023 season. The five-year veteran is probably looking forward to getting the offseason started so he can retool his pitch mix after going through an inconsistent and injury-filled year.
Quantrill concluded with making 19 starts for the Cleveland Guardians and finished with a career-high ERA of 5.24 and a WHIP of 1.46. Cal's biggest issue was struggling to find any sort of groove from start to start due to all of the injuries he faced throughout the season.
The first IL trip lasted from May 31 to June 30 with shoulder inflammation. A month was not enough time for Quantrill as he went back on the injured list on July 6 and wouldn't see Big League action until the beginning of September.
Qauntrill admitted that "it's been a weird year for me." He went on to say, "Coming off an injury I don't think my command has where I'd like it to be or can be"
This was undoubtedly a difficult season for Cal but there were a few solid starts here and there showing he still has what it takes to be a part of a Major League staff. On May 7, he threw 7.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts against the Minnesota Twins who were the American League Central.
Qauntrill also finished the season strong wrapping up the month of September with a 2.76 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a K/BB ratio of 20/13.

Now the question turns to what Cal's role will look like in 2024. The Guardians rotation seems locked in (assuming they don't trade Bieber.) which would force Quantrill to the bullpen.
Time will tell what this looks like.
