Former Met Darin Ruf Returns to Giants on Minor League Pact

After a rough go of it with the Mets, Ruf will return to the team New York acquired him from last year.

Darin Ruf isn’t calling it quits just yet.

On Saturday, Jayson Stark of The Athletic announced that Ruf and the San Francisco Giants agreed to a minor league deal.

Ruf, 36, was acquired by the Mets at the trade deadline in 2022 in exchange for infielder J.D. Davis, left-handed pitcher Thomas Szapucki, and pitching prospects Nick Zwack and Carson Seymour.

The Nebraska native had a rough go of it with New York, as he went .152/.216/.197 with zero home runs and 20 strike outs in 74 plate appearances.

Under contract for 2023, Ruf participated in Spring Training with the Mets but went just 5-for-30 at the plate and was designated for assignment and ultimately released.

Ruf will get a chance to reclaim some success in a place where he had a strong season just two years ago.

In 2021, Ruf hit 16 home runs and had a .271/.385/.519 triple slash with the Giants and mashed left-handers.

For San Francisco, bringing Ruf back is a low-risk deal, and one that even if it doesn’t work out, proved to be a very strong trade for them.
