Mets Catcher Omar Narváez To Miss 8-9 Weeks with Calf Strain

Narváez will be placed on the injured list prior to the team's home opener on Friday.

The Mets catching situation just got a little thinner.

On Thursday, the team announced that Omar Narváez endured a medium-to-high grade strain of his left calf and will be placed on the injured list.

New York added that the typical recovery time for an injury of this type is eight to nine weeks.

Narváez, 31, went 4-for-14 at the dish this year prior to his injury with two walks.

The eight-year veteran signed a one-year pact with the Mets in December, and the plan was to platoon him with incumbent catcher Tomás Nido.

With Narváez now on the shelf long-term, the team is calling upon top prospect Francisco Álvarez, who is slated to be activated prior to Friday’s home opener at Citi Field against the Miami Marlins.

Álvarez, 21, is the No. 2 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.

The youngster got a small cup of coffee with the Mets at the end of 2022, but began this season with Triple-A Syracuse.

Down there so far this year, Álvarez had a 1.056 OPS with two home runs.

With Narváez on the sidelines for an extended amount of time, the Mets will get a chance to see what they have in one of their most prized young prospects.
