Mets Could Look To Sign Orioles Superstar Next Offseason To Bolster Rotation

New York could add a former Cy Young Award winner next offseason

The New York Mets' starting rotation could get a major upgrade next offseason.

New York made a specific effort to improve the rotation this offseason but did so with smaller contracts to players looking for bounce-back campaigns. The Mets didn't make a massive investment -- although both Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery still are available at this point.

The Mets' payroll will get less murky after the end of the 2024 season and there already is speculation that the club will go back to handing out big deals next offseason.

One player who could be a free agent target for New York reportedly is Baltimore Orioles superstar Corbin Burnes, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

"But as opposed to the (Dave Winfield)-to-(Yoshinobu Yamamoto) timeline, I suspect the Mets and Yankees will be renewing financial fisticuffs more frequently now that Steve Cohen is involved," Sherman said. "There already has been speculation that the New York squads will be in a dollar duel next offseason for Juan Soto.

"Unless there is residual distaste over a February 2023 arbitration that got contentious then spilled into public criticism by Corbin Burnes against the (Milwaukee Brewers) — at a time when David Stearns was merely an advisor and no longer running baseball operations — then the right-hander is likely to draw interest from both New York teams."

New York was linked to Burnes as a possible trade candidate before he was dealt to the Orioles but didn't get a deal done. The 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner will be a free agent next offseason and would make a lot of sense for the Mets.
