Mets' David Stearns Hints Club Won't Sign Pete Alonso To Extension This Offseason

It sounds like the superstar isn't getting an extension this offseason

The New York Mets will have one major question swirling around the club throughout the 2024 campaign.

Will superstar first baseman Pete Alonso remain with the Mets after the 2024 campaign or will he end up playing elsewhere? At this point, the answer isn't clear. Alonso will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

There has been speculation that he could sign an extension with the club this offseason but there also has been speculation that a trade could happen. At this point, though, the most likely outcome seems to be that he will at least begin the season with the Mets on his current deal and enter free agency.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns seems to have confirmed this fact and it made it seem like an extension isn't going to happen, according to Metsmerized Online's Mike Mayer.

“Look, when you have a really talented player, who’s really good, and who’s entering the final year of club control who happens to be represented by Scott Boras, these things generally end up in free agency," Stearns said as transcribed by Mayer. "We understand that.”

Alonso has developed into one of the best sluggers in baseball. If he were to be playing elsewhere due to a trade in 2024 or by leaving the club in free agency at the end of the season, it would be devastating.

It's unclear what will happen with his contract situation, but it's clear that it is going to be a discussion throughout the entire 2024 season.
