Mets Reportedly Have Held Discussions With Superstar; Could Surprise Signing Be Coming?

Could New York actually end up landing one of the best pitchers in baseball?

The New York Mets may end up surprising people after all.

New York already has added to the starting rotation by signing former New York Yankees All-Star Luis Severino and former San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Manaea. It has been rumored that the Mets are done adding to the rotation, but that may not end up being the case.

The Mets reportedly have "been in contact" with 2023 National League Cy Young Award Blake Snell, according to Major League Baseball insider Mike Rodriguez.

"Source: Red Sox and Mets have been in contact since yesterday with Blake Snell," Rodriguez said. "(Left-handed pitcher) is seeking a contract close to $200M."

This doesn't necessarily mean a move is on the way. New York certainly could afford a move for Snell and he immediately would be its top pitcher, but at this point, a move still should be considered unlikely.

New York president of baseball operations David Stearns hasn't ruled out a big splash, but he hasn't made it sound very likely, either. Snell is a great pitcher and would be a major pickup, but he is looking for a massive deal worth around $200 million.

It's certainly interesting that the Mets have been loosely linked to Snell and there's always a chance a move could get done, even if it is unlikely. Mets owner Steve Cohen has shown that he isn't afraid to spend and Snell arguably is the best pitcher available through either free agency or trade.

New York could use another hurler so keep an eye out on Snell.
