Three-Time All-Star Could Be Solid Free Agent Signing For Mets

Should the Mets sign the three-time All-Star?

The New York Mets still could use another addition before Opening Day.

New York seems to be in a better place right now than it was at the end of the 2023 season -- although ace Kodai Senga currently is injured -- but another addition couldn't hurt.

The Mets have been linked on multiple occasions to slugger J.D. Martinez but a move may be unlikely because of the fact that he doesn't provide any defensive flexibility.

There are other free agents out there who could help, though. There have been plenty of questions this offseason about the Mets' third base situation. Brett Baty is expected to see extended playing time but the club was linked to star third baseman Matt Chapman at one point.

New York ultimately decided against a move, but adding more veteran depth at third base still could make sense. One player who still is available who could make sense is three-time All-Star Evan Longoria.

Longoria spent the 2023 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and clubbed 11 home runs and drove in 28 runs in 74 games played. He still is available and could be a solid option to add more depth to the roster. Longoria could be in a bench role but provide more depth at third base and designated hitter while also giving young players like Baty a chance.

The 38-year-old is a 16-year veteran and could also be a great addition to help provide mentorship and guidance to some of the young players on the roster.

He won't cost as much as someone like Martinez and could help out in many ways. Why not take a chance on him?
