Former Padres Pitcher Involved in Multiple Blockbuster Trades Released By National League Squad

Former Padres right-handed pitcher Zach Davies was released by the Washington Nationals last weekend.

Davies, 31, joined the Nationals on a minor league deal this offseason, and struggled in spring training, sporting a 9.00 ERA in 14 innings.

He was informed he was not going to make the team's Opening Day roster, and presumably triggered the opt-out in his contract to hit the open market.

Davies began his carer in 2015 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent five seasons in Milwaukee, sporting a 3.91 ERA in 111 starts, before being traded to San Diego alongside outfielder Trent Grisham ahead of the 2020 season. The Padres sent back left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer and infielder Luis Urias.

In 2020 with the Padres, Davies had a dominant 2.73 ERA in 12 starts. However, that was his only year with the Friars.

Davies was then shipped off to the Chicago Cubs in the trade that brought Yu Darvish to San Diego. Davies, shortstops Reginald Preciado and Yeison Santana and outfielders Own Caissie and Ismael Mena were sent to Chicago for Darvish and catcher Victor Caratini.

Davies spent one season with Chicago, sporting a 5.78 ERA, before spending the last two back in the NL West with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He had a 7.00 ERA in 18 starts with Arizona in 2023, and will now look for a new team for the 2024 season.
