Padres Free Agent Catcher Gary Sanchez To Sign With Brewers: Report

He's onto his next team.

Padres free agent catcher Gary Sanchez has reportedly found a new home. On Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Sanchez was signing with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The contract is for one year and $7 million with a mutual option, according to Heyman.

The Padres claimed Sanchez off waivers from the New York Mets at the end of May, and he instantly revitalized his season. After going 1-for-6 with New York with three strikeouts, Sanchez made a name for himself as a starting catcher in San Diego.

Sanchez appeared in 72 games with the Friars, slashing .218/.292/.500 with 19 home runs and 46 runs batted in. He also became Blake Snell's personal catcher, and helped him turn his season into an eventual Cy Young award winning campaign.

The Padres had been linked to Sanchez this offseason, but they didn't exactly have a need for him after acquiring catcher Kyle Higashioka as part of the Juan Soto trade with the New York Yankees.

Between Higashioka, Luis Campusano and Brett Sullivan the Padres are set at the catcher position heading into 2024.

There were reports early in free agency that Sanchez may end up signing wherever Snell signed. However, with Snell still a free agent, Sanchez has found his next home in Milwaukee.

The Brewers will be Sanchez's fifth MLB team. He began his career with the Yankees, and played one season with the Minnesota Twins before playing with the Mets and Padres last year.

The two-time All-Star and one-time Silver Slugger award winner has 173 career home runs.
