Rangers Announce Signing of Robbie Grossman

The Texas Rangers have agreed to sign the 10-year veteran who could help in left field.

The Texas Rangers have reached an agreement with former Atlanta outfielder Robbie Grossman, per the New York Post and several outlets.

The Rangers announced the agreement on Friday night. He will reportedly make a base salary of $2 million, with incentives that could drive the deal up to $5 million.

Grossman is a 10-year veteran who has played for five different teams and has a .245 career batting average with 80 home runs and 336 RBI. He finished last season with the Atlanta Braves.

He’s played outfield throughout his career and is a potential answer to the dilemma the Rangers have been sorting through in left.

Grossman broke in with the Houston Astros in 2013 and has also played with the Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers.

The Rangers appear set at right field and center field with Adolis Garcia and Leody Taveras, respectively. But left field has been a position the team has been trying to address this offseason.

Some of the current options on the roster include incumbent Bubba Thompson, along with Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran. The latter two of which have turned heads on the trade market.

There is also Mark Mathias, who was acquired last season and can play infield and outfield.

Thompson is coming off a 2022 in which he batted .265/.302/.312/.614 in 55 games with the Rangers after his call-up in August. Thompson is perhaps the fastest player on the roster. He stole 18 bases with the Rangers, but set a Triple-A Round Rock record for stolen bases in a season before his call-up. He has a solid glove and hasn’t shown much power.

Still, Thompson could ultimately be the long-term option for the Rangers. He just doesn’t have the track record yet. The same is true for Smith and Duran, two infielders trying to find a role as an outfielder. Mathias has just 127 MLB at-bats.
