Elite Red Sox Prospect Promoted To Triple-A After Dominant Start To Breakout Season

The young fireballer has been quick to move up the ranks

The drought of successful starting pitchers in the Boston Red Sox farm system may be coming to an end.

“The Red Sox will promote Shane Drohan to Triple-A Worcester,” Beyond The Monster’s Chris Henrique tweeted Monday morning.

The 24-year-old flamethrower was selected by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft and has been steadily moving up the farm system ever since. Sox Prospects has Drohan as the No. 5 prospect in the organization.

After adding some weight and velocity in the offseason, the southpaw got off to a red-hot start for the Portland Sea Dogs. Now Drohan is presumed to be taking the mound Thursday night for his WooSox debut.

Drohan posted a 1.32 ERA with a 36-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 0.82 WHIP in 34 innings pitched for the Sea Dogs this season.

The hurler has been touching 96 mph and sits comfortably around the 92-94 mph range. He has a good set of tools to work with that include a change-up, curveball, and cutter.

If Drohan continues to impress and earns a spot on the Major League roster down the line, he’ll have a shot to be one of the very few homegrown talents to potentially succeed at the highest level.

The current Red Sox rotation is cluttered enough as it is but Drohan could be a large part of the equation in the future.
