Red Sox Cut Ties With Pair Of Prospects After Lackluster Stints In Organization

Boston has seen enough of two prospects with seemingly limited ceilings

The Boston Red Sox announced a shakeup in the minor leagues after two prospects didn’t meet expectations this season.

The Red Sox cleared two spots on the roster, likely to make room for fast-rising pitching prospect Shane Drohan -- who was officially promoted Thursday -- alongside another unknown move.

“Red Sox released right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson and infielder Edwin Díaz,” MassLive's Chris Cotillo tweeted Thursday.

Thompson spent numerous years in the Boston Red Sox organization but his recent struggles with the WooSox turned out to be his last. Thompson posted a 5.40 ERA with a 6-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and .349 batting average against in 10 innings at the Triple-A level this year.

This marks yet another pitcher who didn’t pan out for the Red Sox after being drafted by the club in the fourth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.

It's clear that the WooSox needed to open up a spot on the active roster, and elected to cut ties with Thompson over a demotion that would have only further impeded his development.

Díaz was recently called up to Worcester, only spending a little over a week with the WooSox before being released. He struck out twice and recorded one hit in three at-bats. He opened his season with 13 games in Double-A Portland where he hit a mere .091 with a .462 OPS.

The infielder only signed with the Red Sox organization in January after bouncing around a few American League teams, most recently the Houston Astros.

Neither prospect had high expectations and their releases will have little-to-no effect on the outlook of the farm system or big league roster.
