Mission accomplished. There's a new shortstop in town.

Top prospect Anthony Volpe has won the Yankees' starting shortstop job, beating out Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Volpe was not on the Yankees' 40-man roster and only has 22 games of experience at the Triple-A level, but he forced his way onto the team by flashing his talent and high potential in Spring Training.

The 21-year-old New Jersey native will be the youngest Yankee to start on Opening Day since Derek Jeter in 1996, per MLB.com.

Volpe will be the first Yankees rookie to start on Opening Day since Aaron Judge in 2017.

Despite having a scheduled day off on Sunday, Volpe was informed that he made the team following the Yankees' Grapefruit League game.

In 17 spring games, Volpe is batting .314 with a 1.064 OPS and five steals. Volpe brings speed and athleticism to the Yankees' lineup, and he could be a spark plug with said tools. He can also steal bases, swiping 50 bags between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.

Volpe is the Yankees' No. 1 ranked prospect in their farm system and the fifth-best prospect in baseball, per MLB Pipeline.

He will now make his big-league debut on Opening Day, as the Yankees' starting shortstop.
