The New York Yankees could've used this player given how banged up their outfield has been this season.

On Friday, the New York Mets signed ex-Yankees outfielder Rafael Ortega to a minor league deal, per Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors.

The Mets then assigned Ortega to Triple-A Syracuse.

Ortega signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in the winter. The 32-year-old had a strong Spring Training, but did not crack the Opening Day roster. After learning that he did not make the team, Ortega requested and was granted his release from the organization.

Shortly thereafter, Ortega signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. In 44 games for their Triple-A affiliate this season, Ortega slashed .226/.333/.381 with 5 home runs and 26 RBI.

Ortega was released by the Rangers on June 4.

Ortega played for the Chicago Cubs last season, appearing in 118 games, while slashing .241/.331/.358 with 7 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Fortunately for the Yankees, center fielder Harrison Bader is expected to return from a hamstring strain on Friday. They have also been without Aaron Judge, who has no timetable with a toe injury.

With Judge and Bader out, the Yankees have been forced to turn to Billy McKinney, Willie Calhoun, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Jake Bauers in the outfield.
