The New York Yankees reportedly asked David Ross to be the team's next bench coach, according to The Athletic

After being fired by the Chicago Cubs last week, Ross doesn't seem to have much interest in becoming a bench coach.

Ross' firing came as the Cubs made room to hire Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell.

Ross made his decision with the hope of landing one of the remaining managerial jobs on the market. With the Houston Astros reportedly set to elevate bench coach Joe Espada on Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres are the only two remaining openings.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone and David Ross have some history together. The two worked at ESPN and Boone helped Ross during the Cubs interview process.

While their relationship makes it a good fit, it now looks unlikely the former manager will take a bench job for 2024.

Carlos Mendoza, the former Yankees bench coach, accepted the New York Mets manager position.

Mendoza had been the Yankees bench coach since November of 2019. The Yankees' other options include Brad Ausmus and Andrew Bailey, according to The Athletic:

"With Ross an unlikely addition, the Yankees are contemplating other candidates for their bench-coach vacancy. Brad Ausmus and Andrew Bailey are among those under consideration, sources said. Another option for the Yankees is to move Luis Rojas, the former Mets’ manager, from third base coach to bench coach, and hire a new third-base coach."

If the Yankees had been able to add Ross, it would have been an impressive addition to the coaching staff.

If Milwaukee and San Diego decide against hiring Ross, it's likely the Yankees' bench coach job will be filled and Ross will be looking for other work in 2024.
