Former Yankees Starter Agrees To Deal With Diamondbacks

The New York Yankees will not get a reunion with one of their former starting pitchers as he signs with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The New York Yankees will not reunite with one of their former starting pitchers, as Jordan Montgomery agreed to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

ESPN reported the deal, which is pending a physical. Terms were not disclosed.

Montgomery started his MLB career with the Yankees, breaking in with the club in 2017. He made 29 starts that season, going 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA.

In 2018 and 2019 he made just eight appearances (seven starts) as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He then made 10 starts in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and finished with a 2-3 record and a 5.11 ERA. He made one postseason start in the ALDS against Toronto.

He bounced back in 2021, going 6-7 with a 3.83 ERA in 30 starts and was 3-3 with a 3.69 ERA in 21 starts with the Yankees before he was traded at the deadline to the St. Louis Cardinals. He helped the Cardinals win the NL Central.

He started 2023 with St. Louis and was traded to the Texas Rangers, who ended up winning their first World Series title at the expense of the Diamondbacks.

Montgomery is coming off a 2023 in which he had his best overall season, as he went 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA with 166 strikeouts and 48 walks. With the Rangers he went 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA.

He shined in the postseason, as he went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA. He won two of his five starts in the postseason and claimed the win in relief in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.

There was some speculation that the Yankees might be interested in bringing the left-hander back to the Bronx, especially after having to shut down reigning Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole for the first part of the season.

Instead, the Diamondbacks swooped in and got him two days before Opening Day.
