Former New York Yankees Pitching Target Has New Suitor

The New York Yankees had interest in this two-time Cy Young winner earlier this offseason.

The New York Yankees have made one offer to reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell. It is, reportedly, still the only offer Snell has on the table.

But, as the New York Post reported on Thursday, there is at least one American League team in contact with Snell and his representatives.

The Post reported that the Los Angeles Angels have remained “in touch” with Snell, but that the team’s owner, Arte Moreno, hasn’t given the go-ahead to make an offer.

The Angels lost Shohei Ohtani to the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency, so brining in a pitcher of Snell’s ability would be logical to anchor their rotation for 2024.

When the Yankees made their reported offer earlier this offseason, it was believed to be a six-year, $150 million offer. Later, the Post reported that the Yankees were interested enough to consider paying Snell more per year than they’re paying Carlos Rodón, which is $27 million per year.

But an agreement never came to pass. It’s believed the Yankees have withdrawn the offer. The Yankees signed Marcus Stroman to a deal.

But, like outfielder Cody Bellinger and third baseman Matt Chapman, Snell remains on the market. So does former Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery. As long as a player like Snell remains unsigned, there is always a chance the Yankees could circle back, especially if he can be had at a slight discount.

It’s strange that Snell remains unsigned. He is now part of a select group of pitchers that have won a Cy Young in each league, after winning one of the San Diego Padres in 2023.

Snell won nearly every first-place vote after he went 14-9 with a MLB-best 2.25 ERA. It’s the second time he’s led the Majors in ERA. He did it in 2018, when he went 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA with the Tampa Bay Rays. He won the AL Cy Young that season.

Snell is one of seven pitchers to win a Cy Young in both leagues and one of 21 pitchers to win at least two Cy Youngs.
