Former Yankees Superstar Signs Deal to Play in Mexican League
For just under a decade, the New York Yankees had one of the best infielders in the game manning second base.
Robinson Cano was flat out dominant.
During his nine season with the Yankees, he was an All-Star five times, finished runner-up in AL Rookie of the Year voting, won a World Series championship, and finished top-five in AL MVP voting three times.
He originally signed with New York in 2001 as an amateur free agent. He made his Major League debut in 2005 and immediately got his career off to a fast start.
Cano eventually left the Yankees after the 2013 season as one of the best second baseman in their franchise's history, racking up five Silver Slugger awards and two Gold Gloves in nine years.
The smooth-swinging lefty inked a massive 10-year, $240 million deal with the Seattle Mariners.
He kept performing at an elite level, getting selected to the All-Star Game in his first season with Mariners and finishing fifth in AL MVP voting. Cano was selected to two more All-Star games before hitting some controversy.
In 2018, the slugger was suspended 80 games after testing positive for Furosemide, which violated the MLB's performance-enhancing drugs policy.
He returned in August of that year, but was eventually traded to the New York Mets after the season.
Cano was suspended again in November 2020 violating the performance-enhancing drug policy when testing positive for Stanozolol. Since this was his second offense, he missed the entirety of 2021 with a 162-game penalty.
He played for three teams in 2022, his last time competing in the MLB.
Now, the eight-time All-Star is going to play for the Diablos Rojos of the Mexican League according to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors.
The 41-year-old seemingly still has a desire to play baseball.
